An interview isn’t just a test. It’s a two-way mirror.
You’re there to show them why you’re the perfect fit, but it’s also your single best opportunity to see clearly into the company. Too many people forget they are interviewing the company just as much as the company is interviewing them.
At Glass Octopus, we believe in total transparency. Asking smart, specific questions is how you get it. It proves you’re prepared, engaged, and serious about finding the right fit, not just any fit.
Use this guide to go beyond the surface and understand what a job really entails.
Part 1: Questions About the Role & Team (The Daily View)
This is your chance to understand the day-to-day reality. These questions help you visualize yourself in the role and see how you’d fit into the team dynamic.
- How would you describe the team’s work culture? (Tip: Ask about communication styles, collaboration, and how they handle deadlines.)
- What are the biggest challenges this team is facing right now?
- What does success look like in this role in the first 90 days?
- What is your (the interviewer’s) favorite part about working for this company?
- How does the team handle feedback and disagreements?
- What makes this company unique compared to its competitors?
Part 2: Questions About Growth & Progression (The Future View)
You’re not just looking for a job; you’re building a career. These questions reveal the company’s investment in its people and what your future could look like.
- What does a typical career path look like for someone starting in this role?
- How is performance reviewed, and how are promotions or advancements handled?
- Are there mentorship programs or budgets for additional training, courses, or conferences?
- What new skills or experiences could I gain in this position?
- How often do employees advance within the company?
Part 3: Questions About Support & Compensation (The Practical View)
A quick note on timing: It’s often best to save specific, granular questions about salary and benefits until an offer is being discussed, (usually with HR). However, asking high-level questions is perfectly acceptable.
- What is the budgeted salary range for this role?
- Can you provide a high-level overview of the benefits package?
- What perks or benefits do employees find most valuable here?
- Are there opportunities for bonuses, stock options, or other incentives in this position?
Part 4: The Final Check (Questions to Ask Yourself)
After the handshake, the most important conversation is the one you have with yourself. Getting the job is one thing; making sure it’s the right job is another.
Be your own Glass Octopus—be transparent about your own needs:
- Is this a job I am genuinely passionate about?
- Does this position allow me to develop the skills and knowledge I want?
- Am I ready (and willing) to commit myself fully to this role’s challenges?
- From my conversation, do I feel I would be supported by my supervisor and colleagues?
See Clearly, Decide Confidently
Interviews don’t have to be a one-sided interrogation. They are your most powerful tool for finding a role that truly fits.
By preparing thoughtful questions, you shift from a passive candidate to an active, engaged professional. You show confidence, and more importantly, you get the transparency you need to make a brilliant career move.
Good luck!
So, what’s your next step?
